After the world-renowned street artist debuted his latest image — which was spray-painted on the wall of a bombed-out building in the Ukrainian city of Borodianka — on Instagram, Banksy confirmed he has completed a total of seven new works in Ukraine.
After a series of murals turned up in the liberated city of Borodianka, some 56 kilometers northwest of Kiev, the British artist has now confirmed to The Art Newspaper that they are his. Other factories are in the capital and other cities in the region, CNN reports.
A gymnast balancing on a pile of rubble from a building damaged by Russian attacks was the first artwork to be identified. The graffiti artist posted three images of the work on social media on Friday with the simple caption “Borodyanka, Ukraine” – an alternate spelling of the place name.
Another artwork shows a young boy wearing a martial arts uniform with a black belt and throwing a grown man onto his back. Some have linked the image to Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose black belt of honor was stripped earlier this year by World Taekwondo, though Banksy has not publicly commented on the image or its significance.
Other murals depict two children using a metal tank as a seesaw and a woman with hair curlers and a gas mask holding a fire extinguisher. In the city of Irpin, a rhythmic gymnast with a neck brace hangs on the wall of a residential building.
The new series is the first batch of Banksy artwork since last summer’s ‘Great British Spraycation’, which saw the enigmatic artist leave his signature pop art commentary at various locations in British coastal towns.
Thank residents for the mural of the gymnast
After Banksy confirmed his authorship of the gymnast’s mural, many Ukrainians and supporters of the country thanked the artist in comments and posts in light of the social media invasion.
“This is a historic moment for our country, because people like Banksy and other famous people come here and show the world what Russia has done to us,” a Kiev resident told Al in a video posted to Twitter on Jazeera English on Sunday. placed.
