Fighting for existence – baker suddenly got a 62,000 euro electricity bill

Date:

An entrepreneur from Upper Austria cannot pass on the price explosions for raw materials and energy to his customers and will therefore no longer make a profit this year. Instead of 12,000 euros, he suddenly had to pay 62,000 euros for electricity in August. It’s about survival.

“I should really charge 80 cents for a bun, but I’m currently selling it for 50 cents out of respect for the consumer,” says Simon Sailer, junior manager of the eponymous bakery and pastry shop in Mauerkirchen. Instead of electricity costs of 12,000 euros (as in August 2021), the entrepreneur from the Innviertel was suddenly charged 62,000 euros this year in August due to a spot contract (current market prices must be paid) with Kelag.
