Low temperatures and snowfall caused major traffic delays in large parts of Britain on Sunday. For example, Stansted Airport northeast of London had to cancel all flights in the evening because the runway was covered in snow. There were also several cancellations at the major London airports of Heathrow and Gatwick.
Clearing snow from the runways at London’s Gatwick Airport took some time, forcing the airport to temporarily suspend operations at 05:55 on Monday morning. Partly because there was not enough de-icing liquid available.
Both slopes have now reopened in Stansted. Yet there are still delays and cancellations, reports low-cost carrier Ryanair, which informed its passengers via Twitter about the problems at London’s Stansted and Gatwick airports.
Weather-related disruptions are also expected at the largest airport, Heathrow, and in Luton on Monday. Air travelers to or via London should check their flight status online or contact their airline.
Rail cancellations and delays
There were also disruptions or significant delays at various English railway companies. The National Highways Authority warned of “dangerous conditions” in southern and south-east England. There were long queues. Several drivers had to sit in their cars for hours at night on the M25 motorway
Winter will have a firm grip on the British capital during the week: the Met Office predicted continued cold weather and icy air currents on Monday. More snow showers are possible throughout Monday.
