A spectacular fire has occurred in the German state of Saarland: a 100 meter high wind turbine caught fire, debris fell on the adjacent street. The strong wind and the high height of the flame source made it difficult for the emergency services – the fire brigade had no choice but to let the fire burn out in a controlled manner.
The fire in Losheim am See was reported shortly after 11 p.m. At least one rotor blade and the hub were on fire. “We have received more than 20 emergency calls,” community defense leader Andreas Brausch told Bild newspaper. “Witnesses heard loud bangs and saw flames,” said the firefighter.
Strong wind made it difficult to use
Dozens of firefighters and police attended the scene. The adjacent road had to be closed, explains Brausch: “Wind speeds of 50 to 60 km/h make the fire even more dangerous. As a result, the debris can be thrown far away.”
However, the Florianis could not do much more. “Because of the height, we can do nothing but let the fire burn out in a controlled manner,” said Brausch. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. The amount of the damage is also unknown at the moment, but it could cost hundreds of thousands of euros, the German newspaper writes.
