EU corruption scandal – MP calls for his immunity to be lifted

Date:

Belgian MEP Marc Tarabella has called for his immunity to be waived over the investigation into the corruption scandal. He wrote this by e-mail to the Justice Committee. However, this is not an admission of guilt. Tarabella wrote that he never received money or gifts in exchange for political office.

Some of his colleagues and the public would condemn him because of newspaper articles, the Social Democrat criticized. “I have never received any money or gifts in exchange for my political decisions,” he wrote in an email to some MPs.

Trip to Qatar not reported
In December, investigators in connection with the corruption scandal involving the European Parliament searched Tarabella’s private rooms. On Sunday, his lawyer said the MP had made a trip to the Gulf state at Qatar’s expense in February 2020, but failed to report it to the EU parliament as required.

Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced on Monday a request from the Belgian authorities for Tarabella and another Social Democratic MP to have their immunity revoked. The Belgian also supports this. However, he will be sentenced on the basis of “confessions of detained persons with interests”. According to the Belgian newspaper L’Echo, suspect Pier Antonio Panzeri, who is in custody, testified that he transferred “between 120,000 and 140,000 euros” to Tarabella.

Kicked out of the party
Parliamentary circles reported that Tarabella had been invited to a hearing, but refused. The Belgian decided not to speak to the press or anywhere before talking to the judicial authorities. Tarabella has already been banned from the Belgian Socialist Party and her group in the European Parliament for the duration of the investigation.
