Iranian Foreign Minister: – Revolutionary Guard on terror list “careless”

Date:

As reported, MEPs are calling for Iran’s Revolutionary Guards to be put on the terrorist list. The project is “a bull’s eye,” Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said Thursday. It was “careless and wrong”.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps was established after the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and has grown into an economic powerhouse in recent decades. Since crushing the recent wave of protests, they have been repeatedly criticized. Many Iranians, as well as politicians in Europe, are calling for the Revolutionary Guards to be classified as terrorist organizations. The US had already taken the step under Donald Trump in 2019.

The EU has imposed sanctions on many senior Revolutionary Guard officials for alleged human rights violations since the demonstrations broke out in mid-September. Finally, on Wednesday, members of the European Parliament called for Iran’s Revolutionary Guards to be placed on the terrorist list. “But it must not stop with a conviction alone, the EU must take concrete steps against the religious-authoritarian leadership,” Austrian MEP Andreas Schieder (SPÖ) said in a broadcast. The freedom of action of the political and religious leadership must be curtailed.

MP calls on Iranians to stay
Death sentences are not allowed to be carried out in Iran. In addition, a ban on deportations and an unbureaucratic right of residence for Iranians are needed, Schieder said. Street demonstrations in Iran had recently subsided. The protest against the government is now often expressed through civil disobedience, for example by ignoring the mandatory headscarf.

On Thursday, the internet was again limited for two days. The authorities justified the blocks with an exam phase at the universities and concerns about possible fraud. Some protest organizations have already called for new demonstrations. It was initially unclear whether the internet blockages had anything to do with this. Time and time again Iran restricts the internet before protests.
