A cargo ship with 22 crew members capsized in the sea between South Korea and Japan. At least 14 seafarers have so far been pulled from the water during search and rescue operations, a spokesman for the South Korean coast guard said. However, it is initially unclear how many of them are still alive.
Six were recovered by the South Korean Coast Guard and the rest by the Japanese Coast Guard and nearby civilian vessels. According to preliminary information, 22 people were on board the Hong Kong-registered 6,551-ton freighter Jin Tian, which was carrying timber.
The ship made a distress call about 150 kilometers southeast of the South Korean island of Jeju early this morning, the South Korean news agency Yonhap reports. When the Coast Guard reached the target location, the ship had already sunk into the sea. The reason for this was initially unclear.
