The high school in Kaindorf near Hartberg was the scene of a large-scale operation on Friday that caused a stir. Reason for deploying rescue, helicopter, fire brigade and police: An incident with an previously unidentified substance in the sanitary room, which was not without consequences.
Some details are still the subject of ongoing investigations. What is known is that shortly after 10 a.m., someone allegedly poured a liquid into a toilet in the basement of the school. According to the teaching staff, the children who were near the toilet area mainly complained about a dry cough, abdominal pain and a pungent smell.
Building evacuated immediately
Together with the Red Cross, the Hartberg and Kaindorf fire brigades took care of the affected children. Some emergency services searched the school building. “For us it was mainly a respiratory protection mission, during which we also took samples of the pollutants,” says head of operations Johannes Kellner and continues: “The school management immediately evacuated the building, which was very successful.”
The visibly shaken students felt better in the fresh air, but were checked just to be sure. “You are in the hospital for clarification,” confirmed the high school in the afternoon of “Krone”. According to information from the hospitals in Oberwart and Graz, the children no longer had any complaints a little later. They are not injured.
