Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) handed over the first modified assault rifles to the troops on Thursday. With the update of the rifle known under the designation StG 77 a “better adaptation to individual requirements” should be guaranteed.
Each soldier’s effectiveness in battle is also increased — through optimized handling safety and improved aiming, the Defense Department said.
At the ceremony at the Maria Theresa barracks in Vienna, Tanner explained that she was looking forward to handing over the first delivery of the modified 77 assault rifle. Meanwhile, the assault rifle introduced in 1977 has become a unique means of identification for Austrian soldiers both at home and abroad.”
Standard coat of arms of the native soldiers
The assault rifle 77 is the standard armament of Austrian soldiers. The new version is called “77 A1 MOD”. The Austrian company Steyr Arms (formerly Steyr Mannlicher) is responsible for the modification. The defense department emphasized that the order volume of more than 20 million euros will be invested in Austria as a location.
