Thanks to EU mediation: – Serbia and Kosovo adopt standardization plan

Date:

In the conflict between Serbia and Kosovo, both sides have shown a willingness to approach each other. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti have accepted an EU proposal to normalize the long-tense relationship, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Monday after mediation talks in Brussels. Further negotiations are now needed and could be concluded by the end of March.

According to Borrell, both sides have vowed not to take any unilateral action that could create tensions and jeopardize the agreement. Vucic and Kurti allegedly behaved responsibly.

“This agreement is primarily for the citizens of Kosovo and Serbia,” Borrell said. It stipulates, among other things, that people can move freely between Kosovo and Serbia with their passport, ID card and number plate.

The rights of Serbs in Kosovo must be better protected
It could provide new economic opportunities and bring further investment to Kosovo and Serbia. It also promotes trade, as the certificates previously required for import and export are no longer required. The rights of Serbs in Kosovo must be better protected.

Now inhabited almost exclusively by Albanians, Kosovo used to be part of Serbia. After an armed uprising by Kosovar Albanians and massive human rights violations by the Serbian security forces, NATO responded in the spring of 1999 by bombing what was then Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro).

To this day, Serbia does not recognize Kosovo’s independence
From 1999 to 2008, the UN administration UNMIK administered the area. In 2008, the country declared its independence. To this day, Serbia has not recognized this move and claims the territory for itself. Diplomatic efforts by the West in recent years have failed to significantly normalize the situation.

Tensions had recently escalated again: there were roadblocks and shooting incidents. Germany and France presented a new mediation plan in the autumn, which was later adopted by the EU.
