Terrible accident Tuesday morning in the Roppenertunnel in the Tyrolean Oberland: An 80-year-old resident lost control of his car, after which it first hit a concrete barrier and was literally thrown back and forth between the tunnel walls. The vehicle was badly damaged – the pensioner survived the horror accident with serious injuries. The tunnel along the Inntalautobahn had to be closed for a long time.
The fatal accident happened just before 6 a.m. The 80-year-old Austrian was driving his car on the A12 when he suddenly went off the track in the Roppentunnel and crashed into a concrete barrier in a tunnel niche.
Catapulted against the tunnel wall
“The force of the violent impact threw the car into the opposite tunnel wall. The car then turned 180 degrees and hit again against the left wall of the tunnel before coming to rest against the direction of travel on the expressway,” the police said.
Tunnel closed for an hour and a half
The vehicle was completely deformed. The driver was seriously injured, but reacted quickly. After first aid at the scene of the accident, he was taken by ambulance to the clinic in Innsbruck.
Due to the rescue operation and the clean-up work, the Roppenertunnel was closed to all traffic for about an hour and a half.
