The Austrian armed forces received an alarm on Monday afternoon: the radio connection with an aircraft of the Israeli airline El Al was lost. Two stand-by Eurofighters took off directly from the Zeltweg and headed for the aircraft, which was located just above Spittal/Drau in Carinthia.
The plane of Israel’s largest airline was on its way from Amsterdam to Tel Aviv. As Michael Bauer, spokesman for the Ministry of Defense in Vienna, reported, the Eurofighter alarm went off at 13:08.
Just a few minutes later, the all-clear could be called. So it shouldn’t have been an emergency. Radio communication with the Israeli aircraft, a Boeing 777-258, was restored at 1:20 p.m. It is not yet known why the radio connection was lost.
