Imprisoned Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny is suffering from a mysterious illness. His spokeswoman does not rule out that the 46-year-old could have been poisoned a second time.
“We don’t rule out Alexei Navalny being slowly poisoned at this point, slowly killed so that he attracts less attention,” Kira Jarmysch wrote on Twitter on Thursday. An ambulance was called in the night from Friday to Saturday because Navalny had been experiencing severe abdominal pain. But he didn’t know what he was suffering from. Navalny lost eight kilograms in about two weeks. Jarmysch criticized that he was kept in a punishment cell in acute pain without medical attention.
As reported, the opposition politician is suffering from a mysterious illness. He is being held in the heavily guarded penal colony IK-6 in Melekhovo (about 250 kilometers east of Moscow). Western governments such as Germany have already expressed concern about Navalny’s health.
The former lawyer narrowly survived an apparent poisoning attempt during a flight in Siberia in 2020 that involved the use of a nerve agent, Western lab tests show. The Kremlin denies that the state attempted to assassinate Navalny.
The Russian had been treated in Germany for the poisoning, but voluntarily returned to his home country in 2021. There he was arrested immediately upon his arrival and sentenced to several years in prison for violating probation and fraud. However, Navalny and his supporters speak of a politically motivated process.
