Dalai Lama criticized – Tibetans in exile on tongue video: “joyful joke”

Date:

The government of exiled Tibetans has defended the Dalai Lama after a widely criticized video. President Penpa Tsering told reporters in New Delhi that it was “innocent, grandfatherly, loving behavior” and a “joyful flick” of the tongue, the Hindustan Times, among others, reported on Friday. The exile government is based in Dharamsala in North India.

The video shows the Tibetan spiritual leader kissing a boy on the lips, then sticking out his tongue and asking him to suck it. “Who is the victim now? The boy is not complaining, his mother is not complaining. The victim here is His Holiness the Dalai Lama,” Tsering said.

Tibetan exile pinpoints “pro-Chinese sources” behind criticism
Online, many criticized the Dalai Lama’s behavior. His office apologized for this on Twitter. Tsering claimed that “pro-Chinese sources” were involved in distributing the video. He has not provided any relevant evidence. There is no need to explain who benefits from defaming the image, reputation and legacy of the Dalai Lama, he said.

Tibet is an autonomous Chinese region in the highlands of the Himalayas. The area’s status under international law is disputed. The Chinese leadership suppresses the independence ambitions of about five to seven million Tibetans. Their government in exile is not recognized by any country. However, it affects the approximately 130,000 Tibetans who live in exile, mainly living in India, Nepal and Bhutan. The Dalai Lama stands up for the rights of Tibetans and wants to achieve cultural and religious freedoms for them within the People’s Republic, including in dialogue with China. In 1989 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his struggle.
