Almost exactly two years after Gottfried O., 52, shot two women, he asked a three-member Linz Higher Regional Court senate for a lighter sentence. As is known, the former detective was sentenced to life imprisonment for two murders. Justice has now determined that this sentence will stand.
Just a few months ago, O. complained in his nullity complaint to the Supreme Court that as a man he felt disadvantaged in the jury process. Of the eight lay judges who found him guilty of double murder at the end of July, seven were women. He still spoke of an “emotional overload” that spurred him into action.
As the “Krone” reported, O. showed up at his ex-girlfriend’s house shortly before midnight on May 5, 2021. First he shot the mother of the woman (76), then he fired seven more shots at the 50-year-old.
Appeal hearing at the Higher Regional Court
After the Supreme Court had brushed aside the nullity complaint, the appeal hearing came to the Oberlandesgericht Linz on Monday: it was only about the amount of the fine. The double murderer asked the three judges for a lighter sentence. Without success.
“The request for a lighter sentence was not followed up. No more lenient circumstances could be established,” said spokesman Wolfgang Seyer. This means that the ruling is now completely final. Gottfried O. must be behind bars for life. In addition, he is also sent to an institution after his prison sentence.
