Many families can no longer afford a hot meal every day. The city is now countering this with 15 million euros.
Poverty has entered the middle of society. “Many families in Vienna can no longer afford a hot lunch. That simply should not exist in a city like Vienna’, says deputy mayor Christoph Wiederkehr (Neos), who presented a new package of measures against child poverty in the education sector together with education spokeswoman Nicole Berger-Krotsch of the SPÖ. Affected families can now easily get support for a hot and healthy lunch in schools, kindergartens and out-of-school care centres.
Education is a way out of poverty
Return: “Education is the way out of poverty, and a hungry stomach does not learn well.” Access to subsidies will be considerably simplified and salary limits will be indexed in the future (see graph).
In the future, the city will also lend parents a helping hand at multi-day school events. Support is already available for trips of three days or more.
415,000 euros goes to the purchase of teaching materials. These are then distributed directly by the compulsory schools. From next school year, 15 million euros will be available annually.
