Deadly alpine drama in Ausserschmirn in the Tyrolean district of Innsbruck-Land on Saturday: a Tyrolean (67) fell 60 meters during a climb. His son wanted to resuscitate him. The man died at the intermediate landing site in St. Jodok. According to information from “Krone”, it was the former secretary general of the Austrian Alpine Club, Robert Renzler. The Alpine Club has confirmed this.
The accident happened in the so-called Stafflachwand. Together with his son (31), the 67-year-old went on a climbing trip there on Saturday. “After the last length of rope, the two abseiled down the separately constructed abseil slope,” the police said.
According to the investigation, the pensioner did not fixate himself at all or not properly in the abseiling station before breaking free.
Son wanted to resuscitate father
The experienced alpinist tried to grab hold of the loose rope, but was unsuccessful. As a result, he fell backwards in a free fall of more than 60 meters to the base of the wall. “His son immediately abseiled with the help of another climber and tried to resuscitate his father.”
In the end, the 67-year-old was rescued by the rescue helicopter with the rope. However, he succumbed to his injuries at the intermediate landing site in St. Jodok.
