Socialist Party will attend parliamentary elections in Melenchon coalition

Date:

The National Council of the Socialist Party (PS) has approved the coalition agreement with France Insumisa, with the ecologists and with the communists for the parliamentary elections in June. The vote resulted in 167 votes in favor and 101 against, in addition to 23 abstentions.

The French Socialist Party (PS) has confirmed its integration into the left-wing coalition led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon ahead of parliamentary elections in June.

After more than five hours of debate at the headquarters of the French Socialist Party, the National Council overwhelmingly voted in favor of the agreement for the coalition with France Insumisa de Mélenchonwith the ecologists and with the communists.

The vote took place late Thursday and went ahead, with 167 votes in favor to 101 against, with 23 abstentions.

Before taking the vote, the PS first secretary insisted on the electoral danger that his party would present itself alone in next month’s elections. The socialist candidate in the presidential elections in April, the mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo, received no more than 1.7% of the vote; whereas it has managed to pass the 3% threshold in only 12 of the 577 constituencies across France; and in none did it reach 5%.

The goal of this big left-wing pact is to gain a majority in the National Assembly that forces the formation of a government led by Mélenchon as Prime Minister to confront President Emmanuel Macron.

For its part, the New Anti-Capitalist Party (NPA) announced in a statement on its official Twitter profile that “the NPA will not sign the New Popular Ecological and Social Union (NUPES) agreement”, the coalition led by Mélenchon , and in which the main left-wing groups are found.
