A school district in Utah has banned the Bible from elementary and high schools because of “unpleasant and violent content.” The step takes effect immediately in the Davis County district north of Salt Lake City, various American media reported Friday (local time). The background to the measure is therefore a state law from 2022, which makes it possible to ban books and films with “pornographic and indecent content” in schools.
The committee charged with reviewing the Bible concluded that the book did not violate the law, it said. Nevertheless, it was decided to restrict access to high school students.
“One of the Sexiest Books Ever”
The decision was reportedly preceded by a complaint from parents last year. In it they expressed criticism of the new law. “Now we can ban all books and not even have to read them,” said the complaint, which was seen by The Salt Lake Tribune newspaper. One thing is still missing from the list of previously banned books: the Bible, “one of the sexiest books ever”. It contains inappropriate content such as “incest, masturbation, sex acts with animals, prostitution, female genital mutilation, oral sex, dildos, rape and even infanticide”.
Utah is not the only state to ban certain subjects from the school curriculum. In Florida, Governor and Republican presidential nominee Ron DeSantis wants to ban all-ages sexual orientation and gender identity schools. This class is already banned from kindergarten through third grade. The ban stems from a law passed last year that opponents have dubbed “Don’t Say Gay.”
