It’s dramatic what Ubimet weather expert Konstantin Brandes has to say about the weather situation for the next few days. “The heaviest storm in recent years” with, among other things, large hail and extreme wind gusts applies to Austria on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Nevertheless, it should be a maximum of 35 degrees hot.
It’s just warm right now. And that may be the case in the coming days. Especially on Wednesday and Thursday, the air above Austria warms up to 35 degrees. And on Tuesday, it remains relatively stable in most of the country. Only occasionally will there be strong thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening from the Arlberg over the Mariazeller Land to Upper Carinthia. In the course of the day, the front moves towards Vienna, Graz and Klagenfurt.
Stormroller from Bavaria
But from Wednesday it will be really uncomfortable. “The air is humid, the air is hot, it’s stuffy,” Brandes describes the mix, which causes the first strong thunderstorms in the upper Mühlviertel and Waldviertel and in the Alps around noon. In the evening there is a high risk of severe weather for the west and north, from Vorarlberg to the Innviertel and Salzkammergut.
Severe thunderstorms with larger hail and gusts of wind are expected from Switzerland and Bavaria. In general, thunderstorms cannot be ruled out anywhere in the country.
Severe thunderstorms with supercells
“It is one of the worst storms in recent years,” the meteorologist describes on Thursday what the area from Lake Constance to Innviertel expects. In Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, after a calm morning, powerful supercell thunderstorms develop, which then move again in the direction of Vorarlberg, Tyrol, Salzburg and Upper Austria. “Only then can things really go well,” warns Brandes.
Large hailstorms, extreme gusts of wind and torrential rain can be expected through Friday night. It is still unclear whether the supercells will also reach Niederösterreich and Vienna.
Weekend becomes more stable again
On Friday, the heat is slowly being pushed away from the west, but in the south-east, from Lower Carinthia to southern Styria to southern and central Burgenland, there is still great potential for severe weather. Calm will not return until the weekend, when more stable air prevails again – together with more bearable temperatures.
