The Ukrainian army is said to have attacked the Chongar Bridge, an important connection between Kherson oblast and the Crimea peninsula, on Thursday evening. This caused enormous damage. The bridge is impassable and traffic has been diverted.
The bridge was fired on by Storm Shadow missiles, Governor Vladimir Saldo said Thursday. The road to the bridge was also damaged. So there were no casualties.
The southern Ukrainian Oblast of Kherson lies opposite the Crimean peninsula and is partly controlled by Russian troops. Although Russia does not control the entire region, it annexed it along with Luhansk, Donetsk and Zaporizhia at the end of September last year.
In October, the Crimean Bridge, which connects the peninsula to mainland Russia and was personally inaugurated by Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, was partially damaged by an explosion. Moscow blamed Kiev for the truck attack. Ukraine denied this. The bridge over the Kerch Strait is an important supply route for Russia to supply soldiers fighting in Ukraine with military equipment and also has a high symbolic value for Moscow.
Ukrainian “move forward” in the south
President Volodymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, has promised to make progress on the front two weeks after the start of the Ukrainian offensive. “We are moving forward in the south,” he said in his daily video address on Wednesday. He admitted that there has been heavy fighting, but everywhere – including in the east, where Ukrainian troops are on the defensive – “the enemy is being destroyed,” he said. Zelenskyi had previously tempered public expectations of the Ukrainian offensive.
In a BBC interview broadcast on Wednesday, he admitted that the offensive was “slower than desired”. Selenskyj also attributed the small territorial gains to the large-scale mining of the area by Russian forces. Therefore, a careful approach is needed to avoid unnecessarily endangering the lives of the soldiers.
