It was a unique show at the Grassmayr bell foundry: 50 visitors, including LH Anton Mattle, experienced the re-casting of the peace bell for the Alpine region in Mösern. At ten tons, it is the largest bell in Tyrol and the third largest in Austria.
Scoffers might say that the peace bell in Mösern, which was raised to mark Arge Alp’s 25th birthday, has had little effect given the current world situation, even though it was rung every day at 5 p.m. In any case, it has become one thing: a crowd puller and a symbol of peace. After the lease for the location with the beautiful view was not renewed by the landowner, the municipality of Telf decided to transplant it to another, no less interesting place in Mösern – this time on its own property.
And it was decided to have the battered bell recast. The Grassmayr bell foundry managed to organize this event in a public-friendly way. “The number of visitors was limited to 50, unfortunately we had to cancel many,” regretted the mayor of Telf, Christian Härting, who did not want to miss this historic moment with a delegation.
The largest clock in Tyrol and the third largest in Austria
“Since midnight we have been melting twelve tons of bronze, ie copper and zinc,” explains Johannes Grassmayr to the interested audience. “Today the largest bell in Tyrol and the third largest in Austria is cast at ten tons.” of this size always involves a certain amount of risk. Therefore, it is customary to say a prayer before each procedure. Dean Peter Scheiring did this for the Peace Bell.
It will sound again from October 22
Now the nervousness is noticeably increasing, also with casting manager Peter Grassmayr. The huge cast iron pans are preheated so that the bronze can hold about 1100 degrees. Now it’s time to get down to business in front of Governor Mattle. Elevators on steel girders first guide the liquid alloy to three smaller casting ports – and they fill the oversized ladle.
It gets very hot in the hall. Now the big moment: the form, which has been worked on since Easter, is completed. Everything is fine – the rebirth of the peace bell was a grandiose act. The view of the Inn valley will be great – just like at the previous location. Härting: “From October 22, the new bell at the new location will bring the message of peace to the world.”
