Image of a “pizza” discovered in Pompeii

Date:

A 2,000-year-old painting in the Pompeii Archaeological Park shows a flatbread that could be considered a type of pizza. The picture on the wall of an ancient house could be a distant precursor to modern pizza, according to an initial iconographic analysis of a still-life fresco that has surfaced in recent days at new Pompeii excavations, experts said Tuesday.

A flatbread would have been depicted on a salver next to a wine cup, which served as the basis for various fruits, including a pomegranate and a date, flavored with herbs or a kind of pesto. Dried fruits and a garland of flowers are also on the same tray.

Found in the atrium of a residence
Discovered in Pompeii, the fresco was found in the atrium of a house that is currently being excavated. Not far from the house was a bakery, which had already been partially explored between 1888 and 1891, the investigation of which was resumed last January.

The entire excavation site covers an area of about 3200 square meters, almost an entire block of the ancient city that was buried by Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. It is part of a wider concept developed over the last decade aimed at correcting and resolving the hydrogeological problems of the excavation fronts, i.e. the boundary between the excavated and the unexplored part of the ancient city.

Always sensational finds
The ancient city of Pompeii was at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. During eruptions in 79 AD. Ash, mud and lava buried the settlements and partially preserved the city. Pompeii was rediscovered in the 18th century. The excavation site, which repeatedly uncovers sensational finds, is one of the most popular sights in Italy and one of the country’s top tourist attractions.
