It will not be long before there is a real bang in western Austria: in the run-up to a cold front, the chance of severe weather increases significantly from late Tuesday afternoon, with severe thunderstorms, gusts of wind and heavy rain. The storms should first reach Vorarlberg and Innsbruck. According to experts, small-scale flooding is also possible on small bodies of water, especially in the Lake Constance region and the Bregenzerwald. The population was asked to be careful.
Thunderstorms with gusty winds and partial heavy rain are expected in Vorarlberg from Tuesday (8 p.m.) to Thursday (3 a.m.), the state press service reports. The cause of the storm warning is a striking cold front, which, according to the state warning center, will interrupt the heat wave with storms on Wednesday – about 35 degrees was measured in Feldkirch on Tuesday.
Up to 50 liters of rain per square meter
Wind gusts of up to 120 km/h were forecast for Wednesday afternoon in Vorarlberg and heavy rain should reach 30 to 50 liters per square metre. The state warning center on Wednesday night named the border area with Germany, the Lake Constance area and the Bregenzerwald as the worst affected areas. From Wednesday afternoon, the entire state will no longer be spared from the storms.
The weather forecast for the coming days in Tyrol looks about the same: here too, storms are expected to cause a stir on Tuesday night. Thunderstorms and heavy rain showers are expected across the country, especially on Wednesday afternoon. Wind gusts of up to 120 km/h can also occur here. The “Orange” warning level is the second highest level of the four-level scale, GeoSphere Austria and the state of Tyrol announced.
Severe thunderstorms were expected
The weather conditions on Tuesday are predestined and virtually the “classic” for the development of severe thunderstorms in western Austria. Central Europe is in a very hot south-westerly current leading up to a depression near Scotland. During the course of the day, however, the cold front approaches, causing instability and the necessary upward force. In the Rhine valley, in the Montafon, in the Inn valley and in the Flachgau, temperatures of up to 35 degrees were measured on Tuesday.
But the storms don’t stay away from the south either. The Austrian severe weather center warned on Tuesday afternoon for hail and thunderstorms in Carinthia. Cloudbursts can also occur in regions in Salzburg and Styria. The warning level red was announced in the four federal states on Tuesday afternoon.
However, anyone currently in the capital can sit back and relax – the experts have not yet issued a warning there.
