The beach of Le Barcarès in the south of France near Perpignan has been evacuated due to a shark alert. The approximately two meter long animal was spotted about 50 meters from the coast on Saturday.
Lifeguards discovered the shark, which left the area on its own a short time later, the regional newspaper “Sud Ouest” reported on Sunday. He would have been calm and not aggressive.
Swimming was prohibited between 2 and 3 p.m. According to the scientific director of the Canet-en-Roussillon aquarium, Patrick Masanet, it was probably a blue shark. As he explained to radio station France Bleu Roussillon, the animals are more likely to be seen near beaches in France and Spain in summer.
