On Sunday, 86 people were rescued from the Mediterranean off the coast of Cyprus. According to Cypriot authorities, the migrants were on board a boat in distress off the southeastern coast of the island in the Mediterranean Sea. More than 19 children were among those rescued.
During the rescue operation, 61 men and six women were also brought ashore safely. They would be taken to a reception center in a suburb of the capital Nicosia.
Cyprus reports a strong increase in migrants
Authorities have not provided information on the nationality of the migrants or the boat’s departure point. According to the Cypriot authorities, the number of people arriving in the EU member state by boat will increase significantly in 2023. In the first five months of the year, an increase of 60 percent was recorded compared to the same period last year.
