Ukrainian border guards have stopped more than 20,000 conscripts from fleeing the country since the start of the war, according to a recent report. The arrests mainly took place at the “green border” with Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
“Since February 24 last year, border guards have arrested about 14,600 people who wanted to leave Ukraine illegally,” border guard chief Andriy Demchenko said on news television on Tuesday. In addition, about 6,200 men were arrested with forged exit permits. Many of them wanted to avoid military service.
At the start of the war, a general mobilization was ordered with a ban on conscripted men aged between 18 and 60 from leaving the country. However, according to the EU statistics agency Eurostat, more than 650,000 Ukrainian men aged between 18 and 64 are registered as refugees in the 27 EU countries plus Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
Kiev is considering extradition requests to EU countries
Kiev is considering extradition of conscripts who have illegally left the country, including from EU countries. Sales of military exemption documents are booming in Ukraine. After a wave of raids with arrests in the conscription offices ordered by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the price for such papers now exceeds 10,000 euros, the judiciary said.
