Violence in schools is taking on new proportions. This is evident not only from facts and figures, but also from reports from desperate school directors. A director, who wishes to remain anonymous, reveals shocking details from daily school life.
The willingness to use violence among children and young people is increasing. This is evident from a current question answer from the ÖVP Vienna. The number of reports in Vienna’s schools almost quadrupled between 2021/22 and 2022/2023, and the number of suspensions almost doubled between 2021/22 and 2022/2023. An even clearer picture emerges from the reports of a compulsory school director from Vienna who wishes to remain anonymous.
Overcrowded classes
“We used to have one problem child per class, now there are four to five,” says the director. Overcrowded classes complicate matters. Especially in Vienna, there is also a large share of non-German-speaking students, who often have completely different values. Boys refuse to sit next to girls, act as moral guardians and have no respect for a female teacher. Moreover, educators often have to deal with aggressive parents who shift the blame solely to the school. “We cannot take over the entire education system,” complains the director.
Children with behavioral problems
In general, indiscipline increased sharply. Homework is not done and many parents are not interested in school. In addition, there are more children with behavioral problems, often from sheltered apartments in MA11. “In order for good lessons to take place again, we need many more support staff,” says Weener.
Violence is increasingly becoming a problem in Viennese schools
And the Viennese director also makes some very worrying statements on the subject of violence: “Almost every school director of compulsory education has had to deal with the Josefstadt prison.” Moreover, there have already been threats of shootings at numerous schools. It also often happens that the police pick up students and they are back in class a few days later.
