Source of Exposed Money: North Korean Missiles and Their Secret Backers

Date:

North Korea, which is largely isolated internationally due to sanctions, is known to finance its nuclear weapons program through cyber attacks. FBI investigators have now discovered another ‘source of income’ that had previously gone unnoticed for years.

2022 was a “record year for virtual asset theft” for North Korea. According to a UN expert report published in February, the country led by dictator Kim Jong-un stole more money through cybercrime last year than ever before. According to various estimates, at least $630 million or even a billion dollars was stolen. The money, often invested anonymously in cryptocurrency, was then used by the heavily sanctioned country to fund its nuclear and missile programs, the report said.
