It didn’t take long on Friday before the first snowfall turned the places in Tyrol and Salzburg into a winter landscape. Mrs. Holle was partly seen in the valleys, but unfortunately she also caused some problems. Especially on the street. By evening the magic should be over.
Not only in the mountains, but also in lower areas such as in Kaprun im Pinzgau or Wagrain, the snow remained in Salzburg for the first time on Friday (see photos). Winter has also made a comeback in Tyrol: On Friday morning the Brenner Pass was white, with clearing vehicles and thick snow.
Although the first snowfall caused some disruption, fortunately there was no major chaos on the Brenner (see photo below). However, the situation is different on the Katschberg: the snow is already 30 centimeters thick there and stuck vehicles had to be towed away.
According to the ÖAMTC, snow chains were also mandatory on higher roads due to the winter conditions.
Salzburgers prepare for the start of winter
The residents of Salzburg have already prepared for the onset of winter: 160 employees are available in the city to work in shifts to remove snow, slush and ice from the streets.
Carinthia under water after heavy rain
However, the rain storms in Carinthia and East Tyrol had greater consequences than the first snowfall. For example, there was a mudslide in the municipality of Aslling on Friday morning. There were several operations, mainly due to flooded cellars and streets. Considering the preparations, they were quite well prepared.
The snowfall ends in the afternoon
No matter how much the first snow photos make you look forward to winter, by noon the magic in the Ländle is over.
According to the weather forecast from the Central Institute of Meteorology (ZAMG), precipitation in the afternoon will have a more showery character, with short breaks in rain and some breaks in the south and west. Mostly sunny weather is expected in Austria on Saturday.
