Speculation over: gibbon offspring at zoo are a girl

Date:

The little gibbon monkey has been causing chaos in the Salzburg Zoo enclosure for two months. The gender of the cub has been known since Friday: it is a girl! It doesn’t have a name yet. The zoo lets people vote online.

Maya and Samuk are the proud parents of the newest addition to the white-handed gibbon enclosure. The cub was born on September 6. Completely furless and wrinkled, he clung to his ten-year-old mother’s fur. But she is less and less at peace with the young animal. The baby tries to grab everything and even makes its first attempts to stand. At three months, the young animals try to walk for the first time. But even then it is most comfortable in the mother’s peritoneum.

Now that the zoo knows the sex of the cub, it will look for a name. The zoo is asking people to vote for names on their social media pages. From this, two favorites must be determined. “The gibbon parents Maya and Samuk can then make the final decision,” says zoo director Sabine Grebner.

For Maya it is the first offspring. She arrived from the Hungarian zoo Sóstó at the end of August 2021 as a new partner for the 14-year-old male Samuk. A month later the two monkeys had their first “date”. White-handed gibbons are monogamous and usually stay together their entire lives. Visitors can observe the monkey family in the outdoor enclosure opposite the main entrance.
