There were violent shootings in the Guinean capital Conakry on Saturday, the cause of which initially remained unclear. Security forces had closed off access to the city center, eyewitnesses in the West African country told the AFP news agency.
“There is shooting with both automatic and military weapons.” The affected area is Kaloum district, the political and administrative center of the country.
Doumbouya coup
In Guinea, junta leader Mamady Doumbouya seized power in a coup in September 2021, ending eleven years of civilian rule.
This makes the country, along with Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Gabon, one of the West African states to have seen a coup since 2020 – especially amid criticism of the West and former colonial power France and their military struggle in the region against jihadists.
A peaceful transfer of power is still pending
Under international pressure, Guinea’s military has agreed to hand over power to an elected government by the end of 2024. However, the opposition accuses the junta of doing nothing to prepare for a peaceful transfer of power.
