A new initiative gives little ones in Austria, Switzerland and Italy a free complete package to learn to ski or snowboard. The pilot phase starts with 1,200 tots. Over the next three years, 50,000 children are expected to have fun.
Due to rising prices and high inflation, anyone who wants to hit the slopes of Tyrol in winter will have to dig deep into their pockets this year. The “Krone” reported on it in detail. For many families, skiing fun is therefore not affordable. Because of this, children cannot even learn to stand on skis or snowboards. To change that, Mike Partel, Managing Director of Mountain Management Consulting, Stefan Mangott, Managing Director of Seilbahn Komperdell GmbH in Serfaus, and Kornel Grundner, CEO of Bergbahn Leogang, are launching the “Kids on Ski – for free” initiative.
Pilot phase in six ski areas
The goal behind the cross-border campaign: to teach 50,000 children to ski or snowboard for free over the next three years. In this year’s winter season, the pilot phase will start in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis and Leogang, the Aletsch Arena and Grindelwald in Switzerland, as well as in Alta Badia and Madonna di Campiglio in Italy. In each of the six ski areas, 200 children should be able to enjoy the facilities on offer.
Complete package for the little ones for free
The package includes five days of half-day ski courses, rental equipment, the lift ticket and – with a full-paying supervisor – accommodation for the child. Various companies, tourist associations, ski schools, mountain railways and various sponsors are on board. “With this initiative we want to counter the trend that young people spend less and less time on the ski slopes, by introducing children to the snow experience at a very young age,” says Partel, explaining the idea behind it.
