US President Joe Biden and his election challenger Donald Trump have secured the necessary number of delegate votes for renewed presidential candidates in the current primaries.
According to forecasts by the major American television networks, Biden and Trump won their parties’ primaries in the states of Georgia, Mississippi and Washington on Tuesday. The presidential candidates will be formally chosen at party conferences in the summer.
Trump surpassed the 1,215 delegates he needs to be re-elected as the Republican Party’s presidential candidate. Biden, in turn, exceeded the 1,968 delegates he needs from his Democratic Party. This means that the November 5 presidential election will be a repeat of the 2020 election, in which Biden defeated then-incumbent Trump.
The 77-year-old right-wing populist Trump is de facto the Republican presidential candidate since his last rival Nikki Haley dropped out of the presidential race last week after Super Tuesday. For the Democrats, the outcome of the primaries was almost certain from the start: Biden had no serious competitors from his own ranks.
The presidential candidates of the two major US parties will be formally chosen at party conferences in the summer after national primaries, which last until June.
