A Viennese woman and her baby got the shock of their lives last week in Simmering. A suspected homeless African man attacked the two with a stick without warning.
When Jasspreet S. (name changed) got out of her car with her baby in her arms in Simmeringer Spinngasse on March 4 at 7:30 PM, an African walked up to her. The shocked engineer tells the “Krone” that the man started screaming for no reason. He then hit the duo with a wooden stick.
S. turned to protect her 19-month-old daughter, was hit on the arm and fled into the car. Two witnesses intervened. Although she was not injured, the shock remains. Since then, her baby has been scared and she lives in fear that the suspected homeless and drug addict will attack her again.
Police spokesman Philipp Haßlinger confirmed reports of attempted bodily harm and property damage – the suspect is probably at large. To have evidence in court, S. filmed the African with his mobile phone. Jasspreet S. has already been attacked once.
Attack as a “warning signal”
The attack is a “warning signal of the need to take action against unprovoked acts of violence, but also to strengthen support networks,” Jasspreet said. Because, the Viennese woman says, she has already been the target of an attack in Meidling.
The beating will likely bring back memories of a gruesome murder for many. In May 2016, a mentally ill, homeless and previously convicted Kenyan murdered a 54-year-old woman with an iron bar on the Ottakringer Brunnenmarkt on her way to work.
