An attack carried out Wednesday on a logistics convoy of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), near the town of Kidal (north), has killed at least one blue helmet and injured three others.

The attack, carried out using light weapons and rocket launchers, is the fifth such incident in the Kidal region in the past week. At this time, no group has claimed responsibility for the event.

“I strongly condemn this attack, which is a desperate part of the terrorist groups to try to harm the quest for peace in Mali and the application of the mandate of the MINUSMA,” said the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations. UN and the Head of Mission. , El Ghassim Wane.

“Our determination to accompany the Malian people and government in their quest for peace and security remains unwavering. Nothing will undermine it,” he added, according to a statement published by Minusma on its website.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, for his part, condemned the attack and expressed his “deep condolences” to the relatives of the victim, a Jordanian citizen, as well as to the authorities and the people of this country. He also recalled that the attacks on ‘blue helmets’ “may constitute war crimes under international law” and called on the Malian authorities to “make every effort to identify those responsible for the attack so that they can be brought to justice quickly. “. Finally, Guterres stressed the United Nations’ determination to “support the people of Mali in their quest for peace and security”.

The event took place less than a week after at least nine MINUSMA “blue helmets” were injured in the explosion of a bomb detonated by a military vehicle southwest of Aguelhok, in Kidal province. In recent years, Mali has registered a growing number of jihadist attacks, carried out by both the region’s al-Qaida affiliate and the Islamic State branch, which have also increased inter-communal violence and displaced tens of thousands of people.
