16 of Geosphere Austria’s 280 weather stations recorded temperatures of at least 30 degrees on Sunday. The leader was Deutschlandsberg in Styria with 31.7 degrees.
This value is a new April record for Styria and is close to the highest temperature measured in April in Austria of 32.0 degrees in Waidhofen/Ybbs in Lower Austria on April 28, 2012, Geosphere reported in a press release on Monday.
Carinthia also set a new federal state record for April – with 30.9 degrees in Villach. The old record was 29.9 degrees on April 7, 2011 in Pörtschach.
Now a cold front is moving through the country
But the higher temperatures are over for the time being: a cold front hit Austria on Monday, bringing rain showers, thunderstorms and significantly cooler air everywhere. It may rain heavily for a long time on Tuesday, especially in parts of Styria and Carinthia. The maximum temperatures on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are between five and 14 degrees. “This means it will be about 15 degrees cooler than on the weekend and a few degrees cooler than average in mid-April,” Geosphere says.
