Five years ago today, Niki Lauda died. In a major interview with Conny Bischofberger, his widow Birgit Lauda (45) talks about her life with a legend, conversations about death and the battle for the inheritance of a million dollars.
When Birgit Lauda enters the café of the Imperial hotel, Mr. Harald is already waiting for her. The head waiter served Niki Lauda, whose death marked the fifth anniversary on Whit Monday, breakfast every weekday morning. “We’ll give your car keys to the car inspector,” he says, “he used to park your husband’s Mercedes.”
“Mr. Harald saw Niki more often in the morning than I did,” laughs Birgit Lauda, who drives an electric Smart. Then we sit down at the ‘Niki Lauda’ table, of course we order the ‘Niki Lauda’ breakfast, which will be on the menu here forever – chive bread, egg in a glass, yogurt with torn apple and melange – and the widow of the three-time Formula 1 world champion and airline founder looks back on 15 years together.
“Kron”: Ms. Lauda, business first. On Friday it was announced that you were successful in the inheritance procedure. Would Niki have wanted the family to fight over his estate?
