Norway is increasingly isolating itself from the Kremlin: from May 29, Russians will no longer be able to enter the country. The explanatory memorandum states that this decision was taken against the background of “Russian unlawful aggression against Ukraine”.
Shortly after the start of the war of aggression, in the spring of 2022, Oslo tightened visa requirements for Russian citizens. As a result, the issuance of tourist visas was largely halted. Now the country is taking additional steps.
The ban affects, on the one hand, Austrian citizens who can still obtain a Norwegian tourist visa and, on the other hand, anyone who has a Schengen visa issued by another country, the Norwegian government announced in a statement on Thursday.
Close relatives can be visited
However, an exception would be made for visits by parents, spouses or children living in Norway. Russian citizens working or studying in Norway can also continue to enter the country.
The situation at the Storskog border checkpoint, located on the border with Russia’s Murmansk region, is also being closely monitored. It was said from Oslo that they were prepared to take measures if necessary.
