Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy does not expect Ukrainian refugees to return before the fighting ends. “There is no point here in motivating the Ukrainians with any slogan,” the head of state said on Tuesday in Berlin at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Zelensky assumes that after the end of the war there will be a great motivation to return to rebuild the state.
“There will be jobs and security,” Zelenskyj justified. Moreover, there is already sufficient demand for qualified workers. For his part, Scholz promised Ukraine further military support from Germany, but did not comment on the details.
During the Swiss Peace Conference on June 15 and 16, Scholz expressed cautious optimism about Ukraine’s chances of success. “There we will exchange principles for a just, lasting peace,” Scholz said.
“No negotiations yet”
“These are not yet negotiations to end the war, because for that to happen, (Russian President Vladimir) Putin would have to make it clear that he is willing to end his brutal campaign and withdraw troops,” Scholz added ( …). As long as Putin sticks to his “Our message will therefore be: we will not give up our support for Ukraine.”
Olena Selenska also in Berlin
On the sidelines of the reconstruction conference, the First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Selenska, visited wounded Ukrainian soldiers being treated in Berlin.
Zelensky’s wife came to the Bundeswehr hospital in Berlin on Tuesday together with Elke Büdenbender, the wife of German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach and his colleague Viktor Ljaschko were also present.
