A tragic landslide occurred after heavy storms in the Maggia Valley in the Swiss canton of Ticino. Rescuers recovered two dead people. One person is still missing.

On Sunday night, heavy storms hit Switzerland, bringing a lot of water. There were floods in Ticino and Zermatt, and the Rhône in Valais burst its banks in several places. There were also floods on the tributaries. The highest level of flooding in the Rhône was reached in Upper Valais on Sunday evening, the cantonal administrative body (KFO) wrote in a statement. He is expected in Lower Valais in the morning.

Difficult rescue work
The bad weather made the rescue work more difficult. The road through the Maggia Valley is also interrupted and several side valleys are no longer accessible by land. Campsites along the Maggia were evacuated, it was said. Some of the affected areas suffered power outages and internet connections, the newspaper ‘La Regione’ reported online.

The accident, which has claimed two lives so far, took place in the area of ​​Fontana, the Ticino cantonal police announced. They initially gave no information about the identity of the victims. Identification is underway, he said.

Due to the situation, the cantonal authorities of Valais have also declared an alert level for the Rhône itself. On Saturday afternoon, they had already done so for the tributaries of the Rhône.

Rail traffic restricted
According to the SBB, there were restrictions on train traffic around Riddes due to flooding. According to the Matterhorn Gotthard railway line, there was also an interruption on the Visp-Andermatt section due to the risk of flooding. The federal government’s natural hazards portal warned of the risk of flooding for the Rhône from the Saltina estuary to Lake Geneva, according to its website.

Videos also circulated on Platform X that were supposed to show flooding in the community of Zermatt VS. The Federal Road Office Astra reported on its website that the access road between Täsch and Zermatt was closed due to flooding.
