The President of the United States is stepping down and will not run for re-election in the presidential election. He has asked for the current Vice President Kamala Harris to be voted in as her replacement for the November 5 election.
US President Joe Biden decided on Sunday to drop out of the re-election race for the good of his party and the country, a letter said.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president. And while my intention was to seek re-election, I believe it is best for my party and the country that I retire and focus solely on fulfilling the duties of my president for the remainder of my term,” the 81-year-old president said.
Biden has thus bowed to pressure from his own party after his mediocre performance in the first debate of the race for the White House against Donald Trump. Dozens of lawmakers and senators had asked him in recent days to drop the witness because of his advanced age.
The president, who is isolated at his home in Delaware and recovering from Covid, has said he will address the nation in the coming days to explain his decision.
“For now, I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who worked so hard to see me re-elected. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in all of this work. And let me express my sincere gratitude to the American people for the faith and trust they have placed in me,” Biden said.
The US President has asked for a vote for the Vice President, Kamala Harrisas his replacement for the November 5 election, via a post on the social network X, a few minutes after he announced he was leaving the race.
