It commemorates the cable car accident on Lake Maggiore, which left nine people dead. 30 tourists experienced a horror ride on the “Freccia nel Cielo” cable car on the Tofana above Cortina when a cabin collapsed during the departure. For three hours the prisoners dangled over the abyss.
As reported by the “Tribuna di Treviso”, the incident took place last Sunday around 4pm. On board the cabin were 30 foreign tourists who were returning from excursions and wanted to go to the valley. According to eyewitnesses, the cabin suddenly broke loose and slid several metres deep: “It was like a free fall, people were screaming in fear of death”, says one occupant.
Passengers were stuck for hours
The occupants dangled at a dizzying height for hours and panic broke out in the cabin. People tried to reach their relatives on their mobile phones to say goodbye.
The trigger was an electronic error, the emergency brake prevented the worst and technicians eventually managed to hoist the cabin back into the station. No one was injured and an investigation has been launched.
