According to a media report, former US President Barack Obama (2009-2017) wants to publicly endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate. However, the Democrats want to determine their presidential candidate almost before the party convention in mid-August.
Obama has already fully supported Harris’ candidacy in private and is in regular contact with her. There are also joint campaign appearances planned. The dates for these have not yet been set.
By her own statements, Harris has secured enough delegate votes to be nominated by the party as the presidential candidate for the November election.
A nomination could be made before the party conference in Chicago, which takes place from August 19 to 22, the responsible committee announced on Wednesday.
Harris could therefore be nominated virtually on August 1 and select her vice presidential nominee on August 7.
Harris’ only candidate so far
Potential candidates would have until the end of July to file a presidential application and, among other things, to show the support of 300 delegates. So far, US Vice President Kamala Harris is the only candidate. When he withdrew from the election campaign, President Joe Biden nominated his deputy as a replacement candidate for the election in early November.
The Democratic Party said that once a presidential candidate is selected, he or she can name a vice presidential candidate. Harris has not yet commented on who she would like to bring on board. Possible candidates include governors from various states, such as Josh Shapiro, Roy Cooper and Andy Beshear — or Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
