Broadcasting a fake campaign call with the voice of US President Joe Biden has cost an American telecommunications company a lot of money. Lingo Telecom will pay a million dollars (around 900,000 euros) in fines after an agreement with the FCC regulator.
The automated call, using a deceptively realistic-sounding Biden voice, asked voters in the state of New Hampshire in January not to participate in his Democratic Party primary. Biden’s voice was generated using artificial intelligence software. The call’s sender information was also spoofed to appear to come from a Democratic political committee.
Got off lightly
In May, the FCC proposed a $6 million fine against the call’s initiator, a political consultant. The automated call with Biden’s fake voice sparked new concerns in the U.S. that AI could be misused even more often before the November presidential election. The FCC subsequently strengthened the legal framework for taking action against such AI fakes.
In addition to the fine, the telecommunications service provider has now set up a unique program to check the reliability of customers who use its networks to transmit data.
