A migrant on a ship was killed by coastguard gunfire off the Greek holiday island of Symi, who said he tried to ram the coastguard boat.
The incident occurred when a speedboat was spotted off the Turkish coast. The coastguard tried to stop it, Greek Radio (ERT) reports. The migrant boat’s helmsman then tried to ram the coastguard boat.
Then the officers allegedly fired shots. When it stopped, a migrant was found without signs of life. He was therefore taken to the hospital on the island of Rhodes. But only his death could be determined there.
13 people arrested
13 people who were in the boat with the man have been arrested. The Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into the incident. According to the UN refugee agency UNHCR, around 25,000 migrants had crossed from Turkey to Greece as of August 18.
