There is still water, but the news is shocking: the Mornos reservoir, which supplies the Greek metropolis of Athens with fresh water, has shrunk by more than a quarter in the past two years. According to the national weather authority in Athens, the reason for this is a lack of rain, high temperatures and mild winters with little snowfall and therefore less condensation.
Based on satellite data, the authority’s experts have calculated that the surface of the Mornos reservoir has shrunk from over 17 square kilometers to about twelve square kilometers in two years. The sharpest decline occurred in the past twelve months.
The sunken village reappears
The low water level is so extreme that the village of Kallio, once submerged in the waters of the reservoir, is rising again, according to the TV channel Open. In Crete, the level of the Aposelemi dam is falling, and on the Peloponnese peninsula, the level of the artificial lake Pinios is very low.
In northern Greece, too, drought is making life increasingly difficult for people and nature. The drought is clearly visible at the Pikrolimni salt lake, whose mud baths once attracted tourists and which is now almost completely dried up. The surrounding community of Kilkis has urged residents to conserve water.
And it is not only there that the need is there: the General Secretariat for Civil Protection has declared a state of emergency regarding the water supply in 14 communities across the country, including popular holiday islands such as Crete, Sifnos, Leros and Kefalonia.
Rain must come soon
The next rain is eagerly awaited. Meteorologists predict that this will happen in the coming days. They expect rainfall in large parts of the country. As an alternative, the Greeks are pinning their hopes on an agricultural rule that states that a hot, rainless summer will be followed by a cold, snowy winter.
