South African case: Farmer fed women’s corpses to pigs

Date:

Police in South Africa have made a gruesome discovery in a pigsty near the town of Mankweng: they found the remains of two women who were allegedly murdered by the farm’s owner and then fed the bodies to the animals.

The white owner of the farm, Zachariah Olivier (60), and two of his employees were arrested and had to appear in court on Friday for murder. The motive for the crime initially remained unclear.

The suspects can be seen in this post:

Women disappeared after visiting the farm
Police say they launched their investigation based on a missing person report. A 45-year-old woman and her 35-year-old companion failed to show up after visiting a farm in mid-August. The remains of the two women were eventually discovered three days later in the pigsty of the farm in Limpopo Province, about 350 kilometers northeast of Johannesburg.

The victims were reportedly looking for food
According to the Public Prosecution Service, the suspects fired multiple shots at their victims. The woman’s companion, a 47-year-old stranger, was also shot and taken to the hospital. The man is reportedly the husband of the younger woman. The trio apparently got lost on the farm, looking for usable food.

Here’s how South Africans protested against the possibility of bail for the suspects:

Protests against bail
The deaths of the two women sparked outrage in South Africa. Dozens of people protested outside the courthouse on Friday against the release of the suspects on bail. The women’s wing of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party said it was “shocked and outraged” and called for “decisive measures to curb violence against women.” The main opposition uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party said it “condemns the horrific murder of two black women by racist white farmers.”

South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world. Police figures released on Friday show that almost 6,200 people were murdered in South Africa between April and June this year.
