Art criminals struck in the viticultural school of Krems (Lower Austria): a sculpture handmade by South Koreans was simply stolen!
Even from a greater distance, the permaculture garden of the Krems Viticultural School was always clearly visible until the end. One reason for this is an artfully constructed stone tower topped by a special stone carving, which has become the city’s unofficial landmark since its construction last year. The tower was built in 2023 at the International Stone and Wine Workshop, which also included a group of stonecutters and masons from South Korea.
They brought the hand-carved stone statue from their homeland to the Danube metropolis. The sculptures called “Stone Grandfather” have an important spiritual meaning in Asia. Perhaps that is why the Kremser specimen was recently stolen from the garden of the winemaking school.
The statue weighs ten kilograms
“The perpetrator or perpetrators must have noticed the figure and dismantled it. It was mounted at a height of two meters and still weighs about ten kilograms. This requires a focused effort, otherwise we would not be able to discover any traces. The garden is closed by a fence, which therefore presupposes deliberate, unlawful access,” says Dieter Faltl, director of the wine growing school, commenting on the regrettable theft.
“SOKO Sculpture” asks for information from witnesses
In order to be able to view the valuable statue again soon in the idyllic show garden “Nature in the Garden” in Krems, professional and amateur researchers are asking for information on 02732/87 516.
