Just hours after the second subway surfer succumbed to his injuries, the next tragedy occurred on a Viennese subway on Thursday evening. A woman apparently wanted to check on a U4 train when it actually arrived. The 60-year-old suffered serious head injuries from the set.
According to the Wiener Linien, the 60-year-old was waiting for a train on the platform of Margaretengurtel. She apparently wanted to check the subway shaft to see when the train was coming, as witnesses described the accident. The U4 metro line has actually arrived.
Hit in the head by the subway
She was hit by the oncoming train and ended up on the platform. The train driver immediately notified the control center, which initiated the emergency chain. The Vienna rescue team was on site with several emergency teams. The 60-year-old suffered serious head injuries and had to be intubated and ventilated at the scene. The Wiener Linien and the police traffic accident service are currently investigating the accident. The metro driver was cared for by the crisis intervention team.
Due to this incident, the U4 was unable to travel between Längenfeldgasse and Kettenbrückengasse until 6:30 PM. Afterwards the line in this area was only run on one track in both directions and the Margaretengurtel station was not observed. Shortly before 7:00 PM the U4 resumed non-stop operation.
Two subway surfers recently died
It wasn’t until October 29 that two subway surfers had a serious accident at the U4 Schönbrunn station in Vienna. On Thursday morning it was announced that an 18-year-old died from his serious injuries. The 17-year-old died last weekend as a result of serious head injuries. A total of four young men climbed onto the roof of a U4 train coming from Hütteldorf to ‘surf’ it shortly after 4pm.
The two fatalities hit a pedestrian bridge as they entered Schönbrunn station and were seriously injured. A 16-year-old boy escaped with minor injuries, while a 13-year-old boy was unharmed.
